City Like all the other cultures Chinese Americans settled in all parts of the country. However most of them settled in China Town and other similar places in the big towns. The reason for that was their lack of English or just felt more comfortable to be around their own people. One more thing that attracted the Chinese to Chinese dominating areas was the opportunity to get a job. Opportunities for and success of immigrants 1607-1830 Employment In the case of African Americans, employment was plentiful, but it came in the form of slavery Most Scotch Irish became frontier farmers Some were able to rise in the world, such as in politics Living conditions Living conditions varied depending upon the slave owner The slaves were not free and unless the slave owner was “kind”, living conditions were not what you would call magnificent Education In the case of slaves, the only real education was that of life on the plantation. It was incredibly rare when a slave learned to read because the slave owners knew that it would be easy to keep in charge of the slave if they became educated and the slaves did not Social Mobility As far as advancing socially, this was nearly impossible because the slaves were not free Political Representation There was not much political representation for the slaves, but there were some politicians that tried to set the slaves free Some /scorch Irish immigrants were able to become politicians, however I do not know whether they stuck up for their heritage.
Most of the above statements changed after the Civil War 1830-1890 After the Civil War immigration agents went to Europe to enlist recruits for the American Industrial army In 1864 they legalized contracts by which immigrants pledged the wages of their labor for a term not to exceed twelve months to repay expenses of their journey to the U.S.

Seats are set at the farthest end as possible; this is to eliminate as much body contact as possible. One last strategy we developed was to create excuses to change seats. Some unfortunate people will also find themselves wondering from seats to seats. When it was timed to change seats, you can see the hopeful eyes of every single student in the class in hope to seat by the same species. It was true that girls and boys were from different planets.Maybe we are not that alien after all. Later years in elementary schools girls and boys started to show interest to each other. The forbidden topic of the other species found it s way through conversations.
There was an acceptance of the other gender and these feelings were mutual. Girls are still the same creatures that have cooties, but there was something cute about the way they are; boys still have not learned how to clean up but they are interesting to be with. CuriosityPage 4attracted us to reach to a point of understanding. Then there was the first school dance.

Themes:Throughout the novel, the major theme is of greed. The pearl caused people s lives to change and caused pain. The power of greed is so strong that it could manifest and destroy lives. The power of greed is strong in this book and exists in the pearl and the hearts of other men and women.
Greed causes the mind to over work, as it has done to Kino s. Whenever he went to sleep at night, Kino would hear noises and fear that the pearl would be stolen. The pearl caused him to become paranoid of even his closest neighbors. Greed in itself is present in every person s soul.

He starts to listen to the speaker closely andfinding himself agreeing with him. The speaker talks about the men, woman, andchildren that where exploited and used by industries and how his party thesocialist will make sure this doesn’t happen again and again in the future. Hereaches out to the blue-collar workers who made this society and have no voicein this city and society where the rich are getting richer and the poor aregetting poorer. Jurgis felt like he was renewed in life and once again hebelieved his dreams could be met. After the meeting he goes searching for thespeaker who he talks to for a little then is given to the speaker’s friendOstrinski they go to his house and tell each other about their lives. Ostrinskiexplains the beliefs and goals of the socialist party to Jurgis very carefullyhe also learns about the Beef Trust and how it works in its corrupt ways and howthe socialist party can stop them. His hotel isthe center of socialist actions and also the place where Jurgis learns about thesocialist party. He starts reading the ‘Appeal to Reason’ a kind of politicalnewspaper to discourage other political parties. He now also hands this weeklypaper out. He tries to get Marji to quit her job at the brothel but she wouldn’tlisten so jurgis just forgets about it and he starts thinking about what changeshe can make in his life for the better. Before the election Jurgis goes to animportant meeting in which he was invited to, there was a magazine editor therewho jurgis thought he would probably have to tell hi slife story as a workingman to support socialist views. He goes and finds the main speakers are anevangelist named Lucas and the editor Schliemann they go on about what thesocialist party believes in and how things should be, after the meeting Jurgisfelt like a new beginning and the socialist’s barely lost in the election whichwas a huge victory for them and a loss for wage-slavery.
